A relatively low altitude trek, the Helambu circuit is one of the most convenient of the short treks close to Kathmandu. It can be completed in only seven days and is well supplied with good camping places in each settlement. The local people are predominantly Tamang with Sherpa people inhabiting the higher villages, particularly Melamchi Gaon, Tarkegyang and Sermathang. The Sherpas of Helambu are very different from the Sherpas of Solukhumbu (Everest region). The Sherpa women of Helambu wear a dress of red painted cotton and they have a reputation of beauty. While most of the trek is at low altitude below 3000 meter, the high point at Tharepati la (Pass) is 3600 meters and can experience snow even during the main trekking seasons.
